Super-kids for safer chemicals

The sun is shining, and for Oregon kids dressed in red satin capes swinging from the monkey bars, anything is possible—even one day becoming a superhero.

The sun is shining, and for Oregon kids dressed in red satin capes swinging from the monkey bars, anything is possible—even one day becoming a superhero. But today, they need a champion that can help them grow up strong and healthy. With the Safe Chemical Act of 2011, our Senators could be those superheroes.

Oregon families joined others across the nation on August 10th in “stroller brigades” calling on Senators to support the Safe Chemical Act. The bill proposes an overhaul to the out-of-date way our country manages chemicals. Instead of assuming that chemicals are safe, both new and existing chemicals would be thoroughly tested for toxicity and assessed for safety.

The bill was introduced in April, and is now in the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. Oregon’s own Sen. Jeff Merkley sits on that committee, and will be among the first with a chance to promote the bill. Both Merkley and Oregon Senator Widen could become co-sponsors of the bill, if Oregonians let them know how much it matters.

OEC will send photos from the stroller brigade to Oregon’s Senators; but they need to hear from you, too. Take a moment now and let your Senator know that Oregon wants them to be superheroes for the Safe Chemical Act.
