Drum roll, please…
We are thrilled to announce the winner of the 2011 Love Your River grand prize!
We are thrilled to announce the winner of the 2011 Love Your River grand prize! Columbia Slough watershed resident Margie Mitchell stopped by the OEC office in December to pick up her haul: a four person tent, camp kitchen, and two sleeping pads donated by our friends at REI.
Over 1,000 people have participated in the Love Your River campaign since we launched it in October 2010! And 60 people took at least six monthly challenges in order to qualify for the grand prize.
Margie moved to Oregon from Michigan more than 20 years ago to attend nursing school and play in the mountains. She loves backpacking, but her 14-year old dog Jake isn’t much of a hiker any more—so she, her husband and Jake will be doing lots of car camping instead with her new gear!
The one thing Margie misses about Michigan is the Great Lakes, and she is excited that the Willamette River is becoming safer to swim in. “What a gift it is to have a river running right through town,” she says. “And I think too many people don’t even see it as they drive across.”
Margie enjoys Love Your River because it continually reminds her to “re-commit to what I believe in.” Not one to rest on her laurels, she pledges to continue taking Love Your River challenges in 2012 and spreading the word to her friends. As the recycling coordinator at her workplace, Margie knows how hard it can be for even the most thoughtful people to adopt new habits. “Love your river makes it fun to do the right thing,” she says.
Thanks to everyone who took a Love Your River challenge! In 2012, Oregon Environmental Council will be hosting a challenge every other month. Take January’s challenge for a chance to win the 2012 grand prize.
