It's Your Oregon: Martinez Daycare and Preschool
“Parents worry about the chemicals their kids are exposed to,” Martinez explains, “we try to keep the childcare as free of toxics as possible.” The Eco-Healthy Childcare program has helped her achieve this goal.
Regina Martinez: Ontario, Oregon
Regina Martinez, owner and operator of Martinez Daycare and Preschool and the soon to be opened Pumpkin Patch Preschool, takes the health of her children very seriously. “Parents worry about the chemicals their kids are exposed to,” Martinez explains, “we try to keep the childcare as free of toxics as possible.” The Eco-Healthy Childcare program has helped her achieve this goal.
Regina views making a healthy environment as a great opportunity to have fun with the kids. Estimating that 80% of the children attending her childcare have allergies or cold air asthma, Regina discontinued using scented candles and air fresheners. “We use orange peels and rose petals instead of air fresheners that can aggravate asthma,” she reports, “It’s a great activity to make potpourris with the kids.” Click here for another Regina-approved project for kids.
Regina’s childcare and preschool are certified and bilingual. She offers a reduced rate for migrant worker families, because she believes in supporting her community. Regina is also deeply involved with working to improve the rights of childcare providers in Oregon and has worked with Child Care Providers Together to unionize certified providers.
