My perfect Oregon day is in the interior of Oregon, hiking down one of the great canyons and picnicking by a creek.

Emerging Leaders Board: Celebrating Four Years

Graeme Byrd recalls his two terms on OEC's Emerging Leaders Board.

As I complete my two terms with Oregon Environmental Council (OEC) on the Emerging Leaders Board, I can see the impact we’ve made on the community and the ways OEC has supported my professional growth.

Four years ago, OEC saw an opportunity to invest in leaders who are passionate about sustainability and our community. So ten like-minded young professionals walked into OEC’s office the first time with the goal of helping OEC engage the growing community of young professionals in the Portland metro area. The Emerging Leaders Board was born.

What happened was far more than any of us expected. In four years, more than 25 young professionals have worked closely with OEC staff on legislative actions and priorities, fundraising, friend-raising and educational programs. Beyond the great work the emerging leaders board is completing, we are creating lasting friendships and learning valuable skills.

While I see success in the work we’ve already done, the mission of OEC continues to be extremely important to our state. The work of the Emerging Leaders Board will help foster new leaders for the environmental movement. As the remaining founding members finish our terms, I am excited about the continued growth of the board and the good work they will do with OEC.

Thank you to the OEC leadership in believing in the Emerging Leaders Board.

It’s our Oregon. We are creating for the next seven generations.
