Profiting from New Markets: Biobased Fuels and Products in Baker City

As the economic, social and environmental price of petroleum dependence goes up and up, biobased alternatives for fuel and products are moving center stage in the marketplace. With purchasing preferences for biofuels and other biobased products surfacing at state and federal levels, agricultural producers may have opportunities to benefit financially.

In Baker City, Don Williamson from Weatherford Ranch demonstrated how you can make biodiesel on your farm, using a processor he made himself. John Hamilton, Project Manager for Treasure Valley Renewable Resources provided an overview of TVRR's planned ethanol and starch-based products plant, touching on the crops they will be looking to purchase. Chad Kruger, from WSU's Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources talked about WSU's Triple-Bio Initiative, which focuses on rural and farm resource-use efficiency, and the use of energy and products derived from biomass.
