Step 4 - Building Community Awareness Using OEC's Outreach Tools
OEC’s suite of community outreach materials strives to give individuals the power to make changes in their everyday lives, in order to protect human and environmental health. Use this section of the guide to find out about the different outreach tools that OEC has developed, and a few ideas to implement them in your local community. This is just the beginning. Don’t feel limited to the ideas we have provided; feel free to invent your own!
To complete the training, first, watch the PowerPoint video - Building Community Awareness. Then, follow the three-step strategy outlined below (pages 27-48 in the Volunteer Resource Guide) to complete the Building Community Awareness using OEC Outreach Tools activity. This is the first step to begin planning a project in your local community, but don't stress! This process is designed to make you begin to think about what kinds of projects you might do as an OEC volunteer.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
Step One
Use our guide to choose an outreach project. Don’t let our ideas limit your creativity. If you think of something we didn't list, try it out and let us know if it was a success. That way we can let other volunteers know about your genius idea!
Take a look at OEC's project ideas:
Step Two
- Identify your community’s resources and which program area you would like to work in. Use the Getting to Know Your Community section of the guide.
- Identify your audience and pick a venue. For help, use the How to Plan an Event section of the guide.
- Devise a strategy to make it happen! Use the exercise on Mapping Your Volunteer Experience.
- Once all of the logistics are finalized, don’t forget to request the materials you and your team need from OEC.
Step Three
- Carry out the project!
- Figure out what was successful and what didn’t work to inform your next project.
- Let OEC know how it went! This lets us know how we can support you, our amazing volunteers, and helps us track our outreach efforts. Go online and fill out the survey at to report your results.
