Step 3 - Your Role In Your Local Community

Yes, we can make policies to protect people and the environment, but how do we get individuals to take action for the things that Oregonians care about?

Complete this training to learn how. This is the third part of the OEC Champions Training, and it is broken up into two sections - Getting to Know Your Local Community and Fostering Behavior Change. Both of the tools introduced in this section will be essential for you as an OEC volunteer, when you design projects in your local community.

Over the course of the training video, you will be asked to complete various exercises in this section of the guide. Please pause the video and complete the exercises as you go. Read the materials presented here, and follow the directions on the bottom of the page to complete step 3 of the training.

Contact us with any questions, and return this worksheet to the Community Outreach Coordinator to officially become an OEC Champion!

Part 1 - Getting to Know Your Local Community

As you look for opportunities to get citizens involved in protecting what we love about Oregon, “asset mapping” is a good first step to identify local partners and resources that will support your efforts.

Begin with what you already know about your local community and OEC. This knowledge will help you uncover additional resources in your community that may assist you in your efforts as an OEC volunteer. By going through these steps to understand the resources in your community, you will begin to build community and encourage participation, which will be key to your success as a volunteer. Please read this before you get started.

During part one of this section of the training you will be responsible for following along with the PowerPoint video and follow the link to complete the Getting to Know Your Local Community activity.

The training will also prompt you to complete the activities below from the Volunteer Resource Guide to learn more about your community.

    1. Who Do You Know, pg. 16 and 17
    2. Mapping Your Community’s Assets: Identifying Local Expertise, pg. 18
    3. Mapping Your Community’s Assets: Identifying Community Partnerships, pg. 19
    4. Mapping Your Community’s Assets: Connecting Your Community’s Assets to Your Project, pg. 20

    2. Fostering Behavior Change

Education alone doesn’t change behavior. If only people were more aware of how everyday choices can put the things they love at risk, they’d make better choices…right? Unfortunately, studies show time and time again that even when people have the will and know-how to change, it’s not easy to follow through with action.

The second half of this section of the training focuses on fostering the behavior change of individuals to more sustainable practices in their everyday lives.  Please follow along with the second half of the presentation, and answer the questions about Community Based Social Marketing.

When you are finished watching the presentation please read and complete the Fostering Behavior Change exercise (on page 24 of the Volunteer Resource Guide) using the project that you came up with during the activity in the previous exercise.

For more information on Community-Based Social Marketing please review:

      3. Now that you've read through all the materials, it's time to start this section of the training. Watch the Your Role in Your Local Community Training PowerPoint video to walk you through both parts of the training.

After you complete this section of the training please return the Getting to Know your Local Community worksheet and the Community Based Social Marketing worksheet to the Community Outreach Coordinator
