Ten Shopping Tips for a Healthy Home
Here are some quick tips for your routine shopping:
1. Learn to Love your Labels
Stay away from products labeled as "hazardous, flammable, corrosive
or toxic."
2. Look for "mild" and "biodegradable" soaps, lotions,
cleaners & detergents
Many doctors don't recommend anti-bacterial soaps and
"extra-strength" cleaners, because they contain chemicals that can
irritate our skin, eyes, nose and lungs.
3. Choose low-toxic products
- Look for "PVC-free" and "phthalate-free" products and
packaging
- Look for "non-aerosol" products
- Look for products made from solid wood (vs.
particleboard)
4. Avoid "Bad Plastics"
In addition to avoiding PVC and phthalates, avoid #3 and #7 plastic
containers. Look on the bottom for these numbers.
5. Purchase natural fiber or organic cotton products
Wool is an example of an all-natural fiber with fewer
allergens, and natural anti-bacterial, non-flammable properties. We
recommend you stay away from foam pillows, mattresses and furniture.
These are often sprayed with highly toxic chemicals and flame
retardants (PBDEs) shown to have adverse health affects.
6. Buy organic & locally grown food as much as possible
7. Buy "Low-VOC" paints and finishes
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are in paints as well as other
household items, like carpeting and furniture. Choosing low-VOC
improves your indoor air quality.
8. Don't purchase or use pesticides
Pesticide use, including use of herbicides and insecticides, has
been linked to cancer and other serious health problems.
9. Keep the lead & mercury out
Prevent flaking paint and don't use old or handmade pottery for
food. Don't use mercury thermometers, switch out mercury car switches &
properly store and recycle batteries, and fluorescent light
tubes.
10. After shopping, leave your shoes at the door!
By removing your shoes when you get home, you can avoid tracking
many harmful chemicals into your house.
