Burgerville Names Oregon Environmental Council’s Allison Hensey a Community Champion and Launches New Sandwich to Benefit Her Program
Burgerville’s new “Roasted Turkey and Cherry Chutney Wrap” will raise money for the pioneering work done by Oregon Environmental Council’s Food and Farms program.
Proceeds Will Help Ensure Safe and Sustainable Food for Northwesterners
Starting today, Northwesterners who appreciate fresh local food can eat Burgerville’s new “Roasted Turkey and Cherry Chutney Wrap” to raise money for the pioneering work done by Oregon Environmental Council’s Food and Farms program. The wrap was inspired by Allison Hensey, the program’s director, who is being recognized as the most recent Community Champion by Burgerville for her efforts to make sure fresh, local, sustainable food is available to everyone in the region.
“It is such an honor to be recognized by Burgerville for the work we are doing in the community,” said Hensey. “We create innovative partnerships and programs to build a strong and safe local food system that benefits all of us.”
Over the past few years, OEC has worked with cranberry farmers in Southern Oregon to create a more sustainable product to sell to local buyers—including Burgerville. The organization also spearheaded programs with local winery and nursery owners to systematically reduce their carbon emissions so that they can tackle climate change and realize significant business savings at the same time. Yet the Food and Farm program doesn’t just work with farmers—it also helps create empowered eaters by educating people about the ripple effects of their food choices and how they can help build a better food system.
Hensey worked with Burgerville to develop a wrap that featured local and sustainably-raised and grown ingredients, including cherries and Diestel turkey. The wrap, available for a limited time through August 16 or while supplies last, reflects OEC’s vision and Burgerville’s strong commitment to good food that supports our environment and local farmers. Proceeds from each wrap will support OEC’s Vote with Your Fork! Program, which educates smart eaters and connects them to local farmers, and its advocacy for state policies that help farmers protect the health of our rivers and the air we breathe.
