Local Governments Protecting Our Climate
OEC invites Oregon's cities and counties to become part of the global warming solution.
Over 375 U.S. mayors have signed on to the U.S. Mayors’ Climate Protection Plan, an initiative started by Mayor Greg Nickels of Seattle, which commits cities to achieving or surpassing the goals set by the Kyoto Protocol.
As well, many of these same cities are working with the International Council for Local Environmental Initiative’s (ICLEI) Cities for Climate Protection program to develop carbon reduction action plans.
As of August 2007, eleven of Oregon’s 234 cities are participating in one or both of these efforts: Ashland, Beaverton, Bend, Corvallis, Damascus, Eugene, Gresham, Hillsboro, Lake Oswego, Lincoln City, Oregon City, Portland and Veronia. Check out a map with interactive links at the Oregon Department of Energy's web site.
The Oregon Environmental Council is available to make presentations to your City Council/County Commission or otherwise help your local government become part of the global warming solution.
