OEC created the Eco-Healthy Child Care® program in 2005 to support child care providers in creating child care settings that are as environmentally healthy as possible. The program allows parents to choose child care facilities that are committed to creating a safer, healthier environment for children to learn and grow.
Eco-Healthy Child Care® received the Children's Environmental Health Excellence Award in 2006 from the EPA for its innovative and effective approach. We also received the 2009-2010 Childcare and School IPM Recognition Award from the IPM Institute of North America, Inc. for its work to reduce pesticide use: see the guide to safer pest management.
In 2010, after five years of success, Eco-Healthy Child Care® became a national program led by the Children's Environmental Health Network, headquartered in Washington DC. OEC continues to serve as an advisor.
Child care providers can also visit Metro's website, which provides bleach safety educational and training materials, as well as a free kit for those facilities located within the Portland metropolitan region.
