Contaminants in Traditional Foods, Waghiyi, Petras,
Contaminants in Traditional Foods of the Yupik People of St. Lawrence Island, Alaska: Exposure Pathways, Collaborative Interventions and Prevention Vi Waghiyi, Environmental Health and Justice Program Director; Sarah Petras, MPH, Environmental Health Coordinator, Alaska Community Action on Toxics The Yupik people of St. Lawrence Island in Alaska receive disproportionate exposures from contaminants through global transport and military sources. Residents’ concerns prompted a community-based study which demonstrated that Yupik blood serum contained levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) significantly higher than those of the general U.S. population. Since the Yupik people sustain ways of life that rely on traditional foods, dietary exposure is likely a significant source of the PCBs. Community Field Researchers examined Yupik traditional foods for contaminants to inform community decisions and interventions.
International Actions - Miller, Seguinot-Medina
International Actions to Protect the Health of Arctic Indigenous Peoples Pamela Miller, MS, Founder and Executive Director; Samarys Seguinot-Medina, MSEM, Environmental Health Researcher, Alaska Community Action on Toxics The Arctic acts as a “cold trap” for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) transported north via atmospheric and oceanic currents. POPs accumulate in the Arctic food web, affecting Arctic Indigenous Peoples who rely on a traditional diet from the land and ocean for physical, cultural and spiritual sustenance. Some Arctic populations have levels of contaminants in blood and breast milk higher than those found anywhere else on Earth. Alaska Community Action on Toxics advocates for the implementation of a global treaty to eliminate POPs and works to advance science on the effects of POPs on human health and Arctic ecosystems.
