2nd Annual NW Environmental Health Conference

The Second Annual NW Environmental Health Conference held on March 5 & 6, 2010 was a great success. The conference brought together health care professionals together to share ways to bridge research, policy and practice for better environmental health. Look for the 2011 date in early Fall 2010.

The Oregon Environmental Council, the Oregon Student Nurses Association, the Oregon Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility, Multnomah County Environmental Health Services, Health Care Without Harm and others organized the Second Annual NW Environmental Health Conference held on March 5 and 6, 2010 at Oregon Health and Sciences University School of Nursing.

The conference hosted leading scientists, researchers and healthcare professionals in the field of environmental health and focused on stimulating robust dialogue regarding the impact of the environment on health and healthcare practices.

The 2010 conference included presentations from numerous national and regional environmental health experts, researchers, educators, and advocates from organizations and institutions, including Alaska Communication Action on Toxics, University of Maryland’s Environmental Health Education Center & School of Nursing, NW Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit, Coalition for a Livable Future, Oregon Public Health Division, Oregon Toxics Alliance, Benton County Health Department, the Oregon Law Center’s Indigenous Farmworkers Project and Community Health Partnership and more!

This annual conference strives to promote a paradigm shift in the healthcare professionals’ approach and integration of environmental health concerns in their daily practices with clients, as well as engage professionals and leaders working on policy and community-based levels.  Audience participants will include: healthcare providers, doctors, nurses, naturopathic practitioners, public health practitioners and students. 


Day 1- March 5 covered current basic science, new approaches to patient care, facilities management and community practice, as well as policy issues surrounding environmental health. Read the agenda and find links to presentations from Day 1 here.

Day 2 - March 6 was comprised of workshops providing hands-on training utilizing environmental health technology and toolkits for practitioners, educators, and advocates. Read the agenda  for one of three workshops on Day 2 here.
