Environmental Health Conference: Register today!

Registration closes today for the Second Annual NW Environmental Health Conference on March 5 & 6. The conference will bring health care professionals together to share ways to bridge research, policy and practice for better environmental health.

The Oregon Environmental Council, the Oregon Student Nurses Association, the Oregon Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility, Multnomah County Environmental Health Services, Health Care Without Harm and others are organizing the Second Annual NW Environmental Health Conference to be held on March 5 and 6 at Oregon Health and Sciences University School of Nursing.

This conference will host leading scientists, researchers and healthcare professionals in the field of environmental health and will focus on stimulating robust dialogue regarding the impact of the environment on health and healthcare practices.

The 2010 conference will include presentations form numerous national and regional environmental health experts, researchers, educators, and advocates from organizations and institutions, including Alaska Communication Action on Toxics, University of Maryland’s Environmental Health Education Center & School of Nursing, NW Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit, Coalition for a Livable Future, Oregon Public Health Division, Oregon Toxics Alliance, Benton County Health Department, the Oregon Law Center’s Indigenous Farmworkers Project and Community Health Partnership and more!

Keynote address by Dr. Ted Schettler, M.D., M.P.H., Science Director, Science & Environmental Health Network.

Dr. Schettler has worked extensively with community groups and non-governmental organizations throughout the United States and internationally, addressing many aspects of human health and the environment. He has served on advisory committees of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the National Academy of Sciences, and works closely with Greater Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility. Dr. Schettler also serves as science advisor for the Collaborative on Health and Environment Network and for the Health Care Without Harm campaign. He has published a number of articles on environmental health topics in peer-reviewed journals and is a co-author of Generation at Risk: Reproductive Health and the Environment (MIT Press 1999), In Harm’s Way: Toxic Threats to Child (GBPSR 2000) and most recently, Environmental Threats to Healthy Aging: With a Closer Look at Alzheimer’s & Parkinson’s Disease (GBPSR & SEHN 2008). Dr. Schettler earned a medical degree from Case Western Reserve University, an M.P.H. from Harvard University, and practiced medicine for over 30 years.

This conference will strive to promote a paradigm shift in the healthcare professionals’ approach and integration of environmental health concerns in their daily practices with clients, as well as engage professionals and leaders working on policy and community-based levels.  Audience participants will include: healthcare providers, doctors, nurses, naturopathic practitioners, public health practitioners and students.

Full scholarships available for nurses and nursing students. Recipients are asked to commit to taking one concrete action to advocate environmental health – to write a letter, attend a hearing, or educate a patient or colleague – and make a short report back. Register for Day 1 - March 5

Day 1 will cover current basic science, new approaches to patient care, facilities management and community practice, as well as policy issues surrounding environmental health. Read the agenda and register for Day 1 here.
