Healthy Toys Database

The nation's first toy database helping parents keep lead, phthalates and other potentially harmful chemicals is up and running!

Leaded BootsMany children’s toys contain harmful chemicals that are linked to reproductive problems, developmental and learning disabilities, hormone problems and cancer.

There is no adequate system in place to regulate or restrict these chemicals in toys whether they are made in the U.S. or abroad.

This is a problem we can solve! The Second Annual Healthy Toys database equips parents with the information they need when choosing products and toys for their children.  Healthytoys.org is the largest publicly available database on toxic chemical in toys, including ratings on more than 2,800 toys total for a number of hazards (2008 & 2007 results combined).

KEY FINDINGS:

  • Lead was detected in 20% of the products tested in 2008 in  products from both China and the U.S.
  • Lead levels in 3.5% products tested were above the federal recall standard used for lead paint.
  • 27% of toys were made of PVC plastic.
  • The good news is that 21% of the products tested did not contain any chemicals of concern that were looked for.
