Healthy Toys Database
The nation's first toy database helping parents keep lead, phthalates and other potentially harmful chemicals is up and running!
Many children’s toys contain harmful chemicals that are linked to reproductive problems, developmental and learning disabilities, hormone problems and cancer.
There is no adequate system in place to regulate or restrict these chemicals in toys whether they are made in the US or abroad.
This is a problem we can solve! The Healthy Toys database equips parents with the information they need when choosing products and toys for their children.
This database tests for lead, cadmium, and PVC (polyvinyl chloride). Lead and cadmium are heavy metals well known for their hazards even at low levels of exposure. PVC was tested for, because it contains phthalates, a hormone mimicker, and other hazardous additives including lead.
KEY FINDINGS:
- 28% of toys did not contain cadmium, lead, mercury, or PVC, including many products from China.
- 35% of products tested contained lead.
- 17% of products had lead levels above federal recall standards for paint.
- 38% of jewelry samples contain lead.
