Take the Eco-Healthy Family Pledge

Earth home Every day you make choices to improve your family's health and safety. These include simple tasks, like brushing teeth and fastening seat belts. Children also need protection from common chemicals in their home environment, which are increasingly linked to childhood asthma, learning disabilities, and even cancer. This Family Pledge offers small changes that can make a big difference to your family -- because change starts with you.

1. I will use non-toxic methods to control pests and weeds in my home and garden.

2. I will use non-toxic, biodegradable household cleaning products.

3. I will choose safer plastic products, ones not labeled #3, #6, and #7 (except when bio-based). If a product is not labeled, I will call to find out what type it is.

4. I will not use plastic products in the microwave.

5. I will buy more organic and local foods for my family.

6. I will improve indoor air quality by choosing non-VOC paint, by avoiding aerosols, air fresheners and candles, and by eliminating second-hand smoke.

7. I will improve outdoor air quality by not idling my car for more than 10 seconds and by not burning yard or other debris.

8. I will reduce mercury in the environment by recycling thermometers with mercury, fluorescent light bulbs (the long tubes), energy efficient compact flourescent bulbs, electronics, thermostats, and button batteries.

9. I will find and identify sources of lead in and around my home (for example: soil, painted surfaces, toys, or plumbing) and take steps to reduce my child's exposure to them.

10. I will purchase renewable energy from my electric utility company.

11. I will sign up for Oregon Environmental Council's online newsletter and action alert and urge elected representatives to support policies that reduce children's exposure to toxics.
