About Jana

Jana Gastellum is OEC’s Executive Director as of October 1st, 2022.

Joining OEC in 2010, Jana (she/her) led the Climate Program for a decade. Her signature accomplishments include negotiations on closing the Boardman coal-fired power plant, establishing and defending the Oregon Clean Fuels Program, co-launching the Renew Oregon campaign that put climate back on the legislature’s priority list, securing a state climate commitment that led to actions ranging from protecting workers from dangerous heat and smoke to advances in electric vehicle programs. For the past two years, Jana led all our program work as Deputy Director of Programs and served on OEC’s Leadership Team and Justice Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, as well as serving on numerous state advisory bodies. She helped lead the development of our new strategic plan which affirms OEC’s commitment to creating more resilient communities that protect people and ecosystems from climate change, drought, flooding, and toxic chemicals. Throughout this work, Jana has built valuable relationships with public health, local government, community, environmental justice, labor, business, academic and legislative leaders.

Jana has had a lifelong commitment to protecting the environment, having grown up living in National Parks throughout the desert Southwest and Pacific Northwest, including time at Ganado on the Diné Nation (Navajo Reservation). She has a B.S. and M.S. from Stanford in Earth Systems, spent two years at the University of Michigan managing a soils laboratory that was doing cutting-edge climate research, and then worked in Washington, D.C. for several years as part of the UN Foundation/Energy Future Coalition climate team. During her time in D.C., she helped launch the 25x’25 initiative and learned the power of coalition building, including through rural and international renewable energy development.

When she’s not working, Jana enjoys biking with her husband and two daughters, hiking, trying new recipes, dabbling in art, along with playing with Veggie, their covid-kitty.

“Our issues are urgent and important and I wake up every day excited to do this work with resolve and optimism and to build on the momentum that OEC has established. This idea has guided my career: your vocation should be the intersection between the world’s greatest need and your greatest joy. That is OEC to me.” – Jana Gastellum
