Eco-Friendlier Dry Cleaning

Perchloroethelene: it's not an easy word to say, and it's not good for humans or the environment, either.

A dangerous toxin, Perchloroethelene (aka perc or tetrachloroethylene), poses potential health risks to dry-cleaning customers, but even more dangerous are the occupational hazards of those who work in dry-cleaning establishments that use the chemical. According to the EPA, “The main effects of tetrachloroethylene in humans are neurological, liver, and kidney effects following acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) inhalation exposure.” The chemical has been linked to cancer and is an air and groundwater contaminant. Earlier this year, use of perc was banned in California.

Dry CleanerSo how do you avoid the stuff? Always remove plastic coverings from your dry-cleaned clothes and let them air out completely to minimize your exposure to the toxin. Better yet, we recommend you use a viable alternative: seek a dry-cleaner that does not use perc, try wet-cleaning for appropriate fabrics, or look for clothes that don’t require dry-cleaning when you make your clothing purchases.

Ask your dry-cleaner if they use the chemical. According to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), roughly 85% of Oregon dry-cleaners still use perc, but many operations are seeking to phase out the chemical. If your dry-cleaner still uses perc, encourage them to stop using the chemical, and check our list of Oregon perc-free cleaners for an alternative.

Or, ask your cleaner if they offer wet-cleaning. Wet-cleaning uses computer-controlled machines, water, biodegradable detergents and conditioners to carefully clean delicate fabrics. Wet cleaning is considered safe for virtually all fabrics. Click here [PDF] to download an EPA booklet on wet-cleaning. Wet-cleaning locations in Oregon are listed in the booklet, as well as our list of perc-free cleaners below.

Finally, the choices you make in purchasing new clothing may have the most lasting impact on your health and the environment. It may not always be possible to purchase clothes that don’t require dry-cleaning, but doing so whenever you can will have a beneficial impact on your health, the environment—and your wallet!
