Dec. 2, 2005 -- Oregon Environmental Council Welcomes New Legislative Affairs Director

Lindsey Capps brings strong political experience and communications background to OEC’s legislative program

December 2, 2005 -- Portland, Oregon –– Today, the Oregon Environmental Council welcomed Lindsey Capps as its new Legislative Affairs Director.  Capps is a native Oregonian who spent the last five years in Washington, D.C., where he worked on Capitol Hill and at the US Department of Commerce. He will lead OEC’s advocacy efforts in the Oregon Legislature.

“The Oregon Environmental Council is a champion for Oregon’s quality of life and economic future,” Capps said.  “I’m enthusiastic about joining OEC’s ongoing work protecting the health of Oregon’s children, safeguarding our rivers and promoting clean air. Working with our state’s leaders to move forward on these priorities vitally important to Oregonians is a tremendous opportunity.”

Capps brings strong political experience and a background in communications and public policy to OEC’s legislative program. He has worked on several political campaigns and as an aide to U.S. Rep. Richard Gephardt and Oregon Congressman David Wu.  Capps also served in the Clinton Administration as special assistant to the undersecretary for export administration at the US Department of Commerce. Most recently he was communications director and legislative assistant to U.S. Rep. Pete Stark.

"We are pleased to have Lindsey join our team,” said Jeff Allen, OEC Executive Director.  “He will build on our legislative successes and continue to raise OEC’s profile in the Legislature. One of his strongest credentials is his ability to work with broad coalitions, finding common ground to move forward on the issues. This way of working is precisely aligned with ours here at OEC.”

Capps holds a bachelors degree in political science from the University of California, Santa Barbara and is completing his master’s degree in liberal studies from Georgetown University.  He replaces Matt Blevins who has led the OEC’s legislative affairs program since 2000.  Blevins is leaving OEC to help spread democracy in Kyrgyzstan with the National Democratic Institute.

About OEC

Founded in 1968, The Oregon Environmental Council (OEC) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with more than 2,000 members throughout the state. We bring Oregonians together for a healthy environment. Via programs such as the Bottle Bill, curbside recycling and the creation of local watershed councils, OEC has played a leadership role in helping Oregonians be part of the solution to environmental problems. Our current programs focus on protecting kids’ health from toxic pollution, cleaning up Oregon’s rivers, and protecting our climate by curbing vehicle pollution.
