South Coast Project
OEC and the South Coast Watershed Council are working with a group of South Coast cranberry growers to create a place-based local, sustainable foods brand. These cranberry farmers have implemented innovative sustainable farming practices that are critical to nearby rivers, including some of the most productive and critical salmon rivers in the Western United States. South Coast farmers also have a reputation for growing cranberries that are bigger, sweeter, brighter and juicer than East Coast cranberries.
The goal is to connect the cranberry farmers with buyers who will support and reward their environmental stewardship and enhance the continuing economic viability of cranberry farming on Oregon’s South Coast. We’ll also be telling the story behind how food is produced on the South Coast to protect water quality, native salmon runs, habitat and a local agricultural economy in the face of growing development pressure. If the project is successful, we’ll expand the effort to include other sustainably grown products from the South Coast.
