The universe of apps for smartphones and iPhones can be confusing. The number of apps continues to grow, and it can be hard to find a truly useful tool in a world full of flashy nonsense. That’s why we at Oregon Environmental Council decided to wade into the app store and dig out the best from the rest.

The universe of apps for smartphones and iPhones can be confusing.  The number of apps continues to grow, and it can be hard to find a truly useful tool in a world full of flashy nonsense. That’s why we at Oregon Environmental Council decided to wade into the app store and dig out the best from the rest. 

From make-up to junk-mail, the apps in this list will help you reduce your exposure to toxic chemicals, find products that were made sustainably, and find healthy food and wonderful outdoor experiences. 

Here, in no particular order, is a list of Oregon Environmental Council’s Top 10 Green apps to use now:

 

PaperKarma – stops unwanted paper mail.  Use your mobile device (tablet or phone) to snap a photo of the junk mail; the app contacts the mailer and removes you from their distribution list.  (Android and iPhone) 

Good Guide – focuses on sustainable consumer products and through its database, describes a product's environmental impact.  (Android and iPhone)

Light Bulb Finder – makes it easy to switch from conventional light bulbs to energy-saving equivalents with the right fit, style, and light quality.  (Android and iPhone) 

Track the Nasty Chemicals in the Beauty Products You Put On Your Face – helps you identify beauty products that contain chemicals found to be hazardous.  (iPhone only) 

Grow Smart, Grow Safe – The Portland-based Metro agency provides a searchable interactive directory that helps you find the least hazardous products and practices for a productive, safe, and healthy yard.  (Online and iPhone)

AIRNow – provides location-specific, real-time air quality information useful when planning your day's outdoor activity.  (Android and iPhone) 

Locavore - the easiest way to find local, in-season food.  Pinpoints nearby farmers' markets and farms that sell the products you love.  (Android and iPhone)

Oregon's Swimming Holes – a guide to Oregon's finest swimming holes.  (iPhone only)

Solarchecker – Thinking about installing solar panels?  This app determines the solar radiation at your current location and calculates the ROI (return on investment ) for a solar power system on the available roof area.  (iPhone only)

Seafood Watch – This app (available from the Monterey bay Aquarium) gives up-to-date recommendations for ocean-friendly seafood and sushi.  (Android and iPhone)
